Every year since 1947, the National Turkey Federation have given a turkey to the President of the United States of America. This year will mark the 19th anniversary of a presidential pardon being extended to a turkey. The turkeys are raised and then the day before they are to be turned into a Thanksgiving table favorite, the President grants a pardon. For the last two years the forgiven birds have been flown out to Disneyland to live out their days. Reading the update this week, the thought raced through my mind – “this turkey has no idea what he has coming because of forgiveness.”
C.S. Lewis writes the same about us:
“If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us… We are far too easily pleased.” (The Weight of Glory)
I admit I see similarities between, what I imagine is, the turkey’s attitude toward his pardon and journey to his California paradise, and our response to our experience with forgiveness and a Savior-paid fare to paradise. However, this is where illustration ends. We have the cognitive ability to grasp our error, and return thankful to our forgiving, eternal life giving God. Give thanks!
