Pastor's Blog - 2009/01/03
“According to a study in Annals of Epidemiology, people who attend religious services tend to be healthier than the rest of us.” These words coming not from a pastor but from Dr. Ranit Mishori writing in the December 21, 2008 Parade Journal.
The article caught my attention over the holiday and sent me reflecting on the importance of church services. Are they simply a tradition coming from a good idea some hundreds or thousands of years ago? Or are church services a divine notion?
The Biblical commentary is unvaried starting in the Old Testament through the New Followers of God, went to church. Even Jesus, would have marked the “usually” box on the church survey: “When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.” (Luke 4:16)
The research is available, and reports show improvement in a spread of areas: from increased GPA to being better socially integrated. But one report spoke to me above all the rest.
Researchers Douglas Omen and Dwayne Reed report in a brief article (USA Today) that compared with other activities, such as attending movies or visiting museums, “only attending church was significantly associated with mortality [delaying death].” And why wouldn’t that be the truth?
If church is what we have claimed it is, (an experience of worshipping and hearing from the Source of Life) than it is consistent to believe it has an effect on our lives. Whatever else we have made it, is not it. Church is taking our life to an appointment with its
Originator.
