Pastor's Blog - 2009/04/18
Susan Boyle was unknown two weeks ago. That status changed when the single, unemployed, 47 year old woman appeared on the British TV show, “ Britain’s Got Talent.” After shocking the judges and audience, and then her clip being reviewed some 30 million times over the web, Boyle still says she wants to be the “same humble girl next door.”
Is it possible for this once unknown woman from Bathgate, West Lothian, who is well on her way to recording contracts and actually singing for the queen to stay “humble?” I don’t know if she will, but I believe it’s possible. Here’s why. Before any recognition came, Boyle lived her life doing the menial duties of caring for her aged mother and serving others through charity. I am slowing learning that the voice inside me that says, “I shouldn’t have to do this” or “I don’t deserve this” is not the voice of justice or fairness, but the devious response of my pride.
Boyle’s life fits with what I have been coming to understand humility to be. Today we be take up the sermon series Odyssey of Disgrace studying the difference humility has made in Bible stories and in the end I believe we will realize how ignored and consequential the battle of pride is.
