Pastor's Blog - 2009/05/02 Two very different reports caught my attention this week. And although they couldn’t be further apart in their subject matter they both are illustrative hyperboles of the Christian philosophy.
The first report was made by A. Pawlowski for CNN covering the advances made in our understanding of black holes. The article begins, “Dare to fall into a black hole and you would get vaporized in what is probably the most violent place in the universe. But the journey would yield some amazing sights, though you might need three eyes for the best view of what's going on, new research suggests.” Pawlowski goes on to explain what they believe would happen if you or I got to close to gravity defying pull, called the “one-way boundary” of a black hole. Once there, nothing, not even light can escape. A logical question is, if so much light is being pulled into these holes, why are they black? The answer: Because the pull is stronger than light, it pulls all the light inward. In the end, these holes are full of light, but it’s all going one direction.
The second report has been covered just about everywhere: The 2009 H1N1 flu strain (swine flu). While researchers are well on the track of having a vaccine ready soon, the most troubling concern is that it is extremely contagious. The warnings are out – be cautious in traveling where you will be placed in closeness with groups of people.
In the end, it is the unwanted swine flu, not the black hole, that elucidates what we as a church community must be. While the black hole inhales everything that is in it’s reach, including a lot of light, it remains black because nothing is allowed out. This would be the sad condition of one who attends seminars, worship services, and programs without spending their life giving. As believers in Jesus, it is the flu not the black hole that we have been called to imitate. To be extremely contagious with what has been given us.
