Pastor's Blog - 2009/05/16
A video clip that would make any dog lover proud: This week during rush hour on a New York highway a yellow lab was hit by a car. Besides cuts the dog only suffered a broken leg, in a large part because while it lay in the road, a German shepherd stood guard charging the then slowing cars. It wasn’t until police arrived and rescued the injured dog that the 2nd K9 gave up its vigilance and exited the freeway on its own.
I admit to see the dog guarding its immobile companion, was heart warming. I was reminded that the instinct to help those who are hurting was given by God when He gave life.
For me, it’s easy to think of myself as willing to give up for the sake of someone else… it’s easy that is until I find myself slow to listen, slow to give time, slow to give money, and I could go on. I realize that maybe I think myself more giving than I am. In theory most are willing to serve. In real life, however, most of us are only willing to give, as long as we can keep our pride.
But to me, this is exactly where Christianity separates itself. What about being willing to die and be humiliated? Philippians 2:8 tells us that is in every way what Jesus did: “he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!”
