Pastor's Blog - 2009/05/23
What do I believe about homosexuality? For years gay marriage has been matched with abortion and used as questions for elections. But now we have moved on, according to the analysts, our presidential vote this past November had little to do with these issues. I’m okay with that. I just read an article this week published in Spectrum’s e-letter presenting a homosexuals view of the churches’ attitude toward this lifestyle. It made several valid social points, but failed in presenting anything of a Biblical understanding of where we should be. What do I believe about homosexuality? I believe it is a sin. The “worst” sin? Nope. But it is the sin of idolatry, the same that adultery is.
Genesis 1:27 tells us that it wasn’t just Adam that was made in the image of God, but rather “…in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.” The “one flesh” that a man and woman become is the image of God. What a powerful statement of your marriage. Athol Dickson says “this has important ramifications not only in my understanding of God’s nature, but also in terms of marriage. It explains why sexual sin is dealt with so severely in the Torah. Adultery equals idolatry.” (The Gospel According to Moses)
That is, the unity of one male and one female coming together is God’s drawing of Himself and His plurality (The Trinity). Whenever this is altered because of our sinful natures, be it through uncommitted sex, adultery, or homosexuality it is a sin of idolatry: the creation of another image besides the image of God.
I praise God and pray for your marriage. May it be the image of God.
