Pastor's Blog - 2009/06/06
Talk about a 1–2 punch. The world was saddened to hear Monday morning that an Air France jet with 228 passengers disappeared Sunday night in a notorious stormy area (know as a “intertropical convergence zone”) over the Atlantic ocean. Although dubious, we held our breath until Wednesday waiting for word from those searching the debris scattered area. Then the 2nd punch came when on Friday morning we woke up to the information that the pieces collected in the suspected area are not from the lost aircraft.
The complication isn’t that they were flying in a dangerously stormy area of the Atlantic, but that this is an area out of reach of radar from both sides of the ocean.
Brazilian, African, Spanish and French air traffic controllers tried in vain to establish contact. So while the search continues for the crash area, we can only offer prayers to God for those families who have suffered loss.
But that thought of prayer speaks to a potent and cogent point: there are dangerously stormy times in life – but it’s clear to me from an over-reading of the Bible, God specializes in the dangerous, the stormy and is even closer in no radar zones.
“May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you… Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” Psalms 20:1,7
I invite you to live the story of 2 Chronicles 20 today: King Jehoshaphat was attacked by the Moabites and the Ammonites combined (a 1-2 punch- sure to knock Judah out). It was so bad Jehoshaphat admitted to God he had no idea what to do. God responded: “Do not be afraid… for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” With that in mind, the king appointed people to sing and praise God… the Biblical story culminates with “when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against” their enemies.
I know some of you are in storms - but be certain of this: God specializes in the dangerous, the stormy and is even closer in no radar zones.
So… go ahead and sing today.
