Walking down the street in Germany this past weekend, I photographed several road signs. The reason I deemed them worthy of a snapshot was that a seeming majority where illustrated. A sign warning of a divided walkway for bicycles and pedestrians portrayed a bike, a solid line, and a couple walking. I got the message: stay to the right. Another showed a larger person kicking a ball to a child. In the background were a car, a line, and a house. I had to study that a bit more, but my conclusion was to be careful for children playing in the streets. Of course the easy ones were signs with snowflakes on them (roads may be slippery when cold) and a deer (caution for wild animals).
After my session of intrigue, I realized there is a similar practice in this country. But it was different for me walking down a street in a land where I couldn't understand the communication and had to rely on pictures for understanding. This practice has divine beginnings. There is a forgotten element of Scripture called narrative theology. It is the understanding that the multitude of stories throughout the Bible are more than interesting - they are pictures painted to transcend time and language, communicating a theology (picture of God). Read the Bible stories... and know that they are heaven's way of giving you the message.
