Pastor's Blog - 04/19/2008
This past weekend there were riots, in Haiti, Bangladesh, and Egypt. These riots catapulted to the forefront of our world the issue of rising costs of basic foods. CNN reported World Bank President Robert Zoellick stating that the price of wheat has jumped 120 percent in the past year – meaning that the price of a loaf of bread has more than doubled in places where the poor spend as much as 75 percent of their income on food. This caught my attention, not only that the prices had skyrocketed but also that wheat was specifically mentioned as a basic food. The significance was augmented for me because I read this report on the heals of reflecting on the Lord’s prayer.
Jesus in response to his disciple’s query gave an example of prayer. At the very center of this prayer is the petition, “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) The structure of this exemplar of prayer appears to be intentional. In my study and reflection I was encouraged to see that God saw our needs to be central in our dialogue with him. But in grappling with this I came to see something even more beautiful and better - that is the subject of our message this Sabbath. But while the news reports wheat prices are headed out of sight, God is reminding us to ask for bread, whole-wheat bread.
