Matthew 17 begins with, “And after six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John...” Jesus took these three up onto the mountain for a special time of worship. This was no spur-of-the moment action. I believe that Jesus was very intentional about the six days that He took to prepare for this mountaintop encounter with His Father. Let me ask you, do you do the same? Do you prepare for worship?
Matthew points out, a few verses later, that the face of Jesus was changed, and He radiated with the glory (presence) of God. Check out II Corinthians 3:18. God wants to do the same with us: He wants to change our face. He will, through our heartfelt worship, radiate His presence from our face. It’s a missionary appeal -others will be changed (Peter was), as they cannot help but catch the reflection of God’s presence in your face. But we must prepare for our encounter with God.
I remember an IMAX production I got caught up in. Let me tell you, I won’t be moving to Daytona anytime soon, but I went in skeptical and came out with a newborn interest in NASCAR. Why the change? I was able to witness, and to some degree, experience the drama and thrill of racing. And it wasn’t just the roar of the engines or cars taking the turns at 180 mph that caught my attention. It was the fans, their passion. Thousands are at the racetrack days before the actual race, preparing themselves for the experience. (Did you catch that?) And then comes race day... Watch out! They are ecstatic!
That’s it! People will be changed by what they see on our faces. At work they will see it; those we play with will be drawn to it; and even more importantly, our own families will notice it. All will be changed by our newborn passion and the reflection of God’s presence on our faces.
So prepare to be changed in worship
