Christianity is real life.  That is, God has the best life for you and me. I got a call this week that a 15-year old girl in another city attempted to end her own life.  Last week it was a 30-year old man.  I’m sure you have, like me, stopped and asked the question, what will make people happy?  According to our Declaration of Independence, We in America are guaranteed the right to pursue happiness.  So how do we get it?  I really almost fell of my chair this week when I read an excerpt from a book written by a Syracuse University professor, Arthur C. Brooks. He states, “the factors that add up to a happy life for most people are not what we typically hear about.  Things like winning the lottery, getting liposuction, and earning a master’s degree don’t make people happy over the long haul.  Rather, the key to happiness, and the difference between happy and unhappy Americans, is a life that reflects values and practices like faith, hard work, marriage, charity, and freedom.” (Emphasis mine [Gross National Happiness as printed in Reader’s Digest July 2008])  This is Christianity in modern vernacular.  Christianity denies the modern philosophy of relativism and calls us to hold a standard of values.  Christianity demands we act by faith on the Word of God, with or without the feeling. And Christianity calls love for God and others to come first, all the time. What Brooks describes is the very picture God painted for us, meaning happiness.
