The election is almost over. Tomorrow, November 13, the city of Omaha, Nebraska will finish counting provisional ballots. Experts predict that the results will be one more as (No. 365) electoral ballot will go to Obama. It may not be decisive but as one Democratic official remarked it is “like a cherry on top.” Last week we went and cast our blue, red, or otherwise vote as our conscience dictated. But it’s not all over, after the election Peter Baker wrote in the New York Times; “No president since before Barack Obama was born has ascended to the Oval Office confronted by the accumulation of seismic challenges awaiting him. Historians grasping for parallels point to Abraham Lincoln taking office as the nation was collapsing into Civil War, or Franklin D. Roosevelt arriving in Washington in the throes of the Great Depression.” This is, unequivocally, a time to pray for our president-elect.
The question on my mind this week was, how does the current situation affect the cause of Christ?
The repeated answer came in two illustrative Bible stories. The first, is our subject of study this Sabbath, the story of Daniel. The environment of Babylon in which he was placed was probably the least favorable for the Kingdom of heaven. The second, is the story of Jesus who came to this earth when Herod and Pilot let their politics play out in a way that was anything but conducive to the gospel. But in both stories the Kingdom of Heaven advanced.
The answer was and will always be that God is not dependant on the conditions of this world to accomplish His will. As Philip Yancey writes, “If the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church, the contemporary political scene hardly offers much threat.”
Irregardless of what you read or hear, OUR GOD REIGNS and He is still calling for an undying (literally) commitment from those who hear His call.
